Mott gap excitations in the optimally doped high-$$T_{c}$$ superconductor YBa$$_2$$Cu$$_3$$O$$_{7-delta}$$ ($$T_{c}$$ = 93 K) have been studied by the resonant inelastic X-ray scattering method. Anisotropic spectra in the $$ab$$-plane are observed in a twin-free crystal. The excitation from the one-dimensional CuO chain is enhanced at 2 eV near the zone boundary of the $$b^{*}$$ direction, while the excitation from the CuO$$_2$$ plane is broad at 1.5-4 eV and almost independent of the momentum transfer. Theoretical calculation based on the one-dimensional and two-dimensional Hubbard model reproduces the observed spectra when different values of the on-site Coulomb energy are assumed. The Mott gap of the CuO chain site is found to be much smaller than that of the CuO$$_2$$ plane site.

We report a resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) study of charge excitations in the electron-doped high-$$T_{c}$$ superconductor Nd$$_{1.85}$$Ce$$_{0.15}$$CuO$$_4$$. The intraband and interband excitations across the Fermi energy are separated for the first time by tuning the experimental conditions properly to measure charge excitations at low energy. A dispersion relation with $${mathbf q}$$-dependent width emerges clearly in the intraband excitation, while the intensity of the interband excitation is concentrated around 2 eV near the zone center. The experimental results are consistent with theoretical calculation of the RIXS spectra based on the Hubbard model.

The magnetic properties of the Zn-substituted overdoped high-$$T_c$$ superconductor La$$_{2-x}$$Sr$$_{x}$$CuO$$_{4}$$ (LSCO) have been studied by magnetization measurements and neutron scattering. Magnetization measurements reveal that for Zn-free samples with $$x geq 0.22$$ a Curie term is induced implying the existence of local paramagnetic moments. A comparison of the Curie behaviour between Zn-doped and Zn-free samples signifies a general competitive relationship between the superconductivity and the induced paramagnetic moment. Neutron scattering measurements show that Zn-substitution in overdoped LSCO anomalously enhances the inelastic magnetic scattering spectra around the $$(pi, pi)$$ position, peaking at $$omega sim 7$$meV. These facts are discussed on the basis of a "swiss-cheese" model of Zn-substituted systems as well as a microscopic phase separation scenario in the overdoped region indicated by muon-spin-relaxation measurements.

Magnetic field-induced transition between magnetically disordered and ordered phases in slightly under-doped La$$_{2-x}$$Sr$$_{x}$$CuO$$_{4}$$ with $$x=0.144$$ has been observed. Static incommensurate spin-density-wave order is induced above a critical field of about 3 T, as measured by elastic neutron scattering. These results are consistent with recently developed quantum phase transition scenario.

Neutron scattering experiments have been performed in lightly-doped La$$_2$$CuO$$_{4+delta}$$ in order to study coexistence of a three-dimensional antiferromagnetic (AF) long-range ordered phase and a spin-glass (SG) phase in a very lightly-doped region. Although we studied in a limited range of hole concentration, where N$'e$el temperature is between 270 K and 320 K, no sign of the SG phase was observed, suggesting that there may exist a threshold to realize the phase separation into the AF and SG phases.
